Have A Problem, Need Some Advice
..... Bought A Penn Monofil 27 With A Broken Left Plate  Easy Fix Right... Found An NOS Plate And Replaced The Broken One, Reel Cranks Very Rough with new one. was hard to crank with broke plate  thought alignment issue.... new plate didn't change that. if you leave the bearing in the left plate loose it will crank, if you tighten it the reel locks up.  thought bent yoke or jack took it apart and checked all that, looks good.  how do you check  for a bent spool ?  will any other spools work?  have  some 155, 180 parts reels probably have the parts to fix, not sure how to pin down problem.  have a 29-100 plastic spool if it fits , I may swap that out and try a different right plate to help diagnose the problem, any insight or advice is appreciated. spent about 3 hrs on what I thought was a 20 min. job.
Thanks in Advance
Barry :)

Both the 27 and 180 use a 29-100 spool, the 155 uses a 29-200 spool.  All 3 have many interchangeable parts, including side plates.

The bearing should not be tight, the spool should have a very slight amount of side play when properly adjusted.

Thanks For The Reply KETA, I Understand That The Bearing Has To Have Clearance.......If The Clearance Is Correct The Reel Locks Up, If I Back Of The Bearing So The Spool Has 1/8 Movement The Reel Will Turn. Something is Very Wrong.  Think I'll Swap Out The Spool And Start There.

UPDATE......Changed Spool With Good 29-100 , Problem Solved! Guess Spool Was  Damaged When Sideplate Broke , looks fine, chucked in drill spins true , how do you tell if spool is bad ?

I was cleaning up an old Penn Monofil No.27 reel and noticed the spool markings being 29-155.
Checking on Scott's schematics I found the part number listed below.
Part number = 29-27 for PLASTIC SPOOL
Part number = 29M-27 for METAL SPOOL
I also have a spare spool in the box marked No. 29-27 for No. 27 Reel
I think the confusion arises from the "part number" being 29-27 but on the actual spool it is marked 29-155.

I Have Also Seen Cases Where The Part # Is Not For The Reel You Are Working On....The Same Part My Be Used In 10  Different Reels, penn has always done this to keep costs low. The monofil 27  I Was Working On Had A Metal Spool With No Part Number. had some parts for ,180 & 155, The Spool I Had Was A 29-100 That Was In A penn 180, Go Figure....Keta Told Me That Spool Would Interchange....Who Knew!  Reel Fixed Works Perfect All Good .
Thanks To All

Glad you got it figured out Barry.
I try not to buy reel with busted side plates, because something else is usually busted inside.
If I just need the parts, then it is a different story.

If the metal spool had a marking of CN on it most likely it was a Carl Newell spool. I have one in my 27.

Since the pis the handle was been swapped out.

Rolling the spool on a flat surface can allow you to see if the shaft is bent...it has visible "wobble" as you spin it that you don't see on a good spool.

Sometimes it is hard to spot when it gets bent on that side when the reel hit with sufficient force.

There was a reason why the tail plate was cracked.
