So this Calcutta was not working well...I broke it down.and besides a bunch of sand and old grease,,I can't see anything wrong..I am suspecting maybe the pawl? Because the level wind goes all the to the frame on one side,,and locks up of course, but when it goes to the other side it does what it's supposed to do..comes back in the other direction. Is this a pawl issue?

The worm drive is damaged where the pawl locks - replace worm and pawl.

What model is it?

Looks like worm drives are available for both A and B series in 200 and 400 models.

The model should be inscribed on the RH sideplate.

Take a pic and post it.

Yep,

That's a 400A.

Besides the designation, the two side-plate screws and the hard plastic handle are dead giveaways.

The"A" is understood to distinguish it when the B series followed.

The B series was a quick followup upgrade with a backup A/R pawl. It also has three side plate securing screws and  a soft Septone handle.

Otherwise they are essentially the same reel with mostly interchangeable parts.

The B series was so iconic that it is still manufactured today despite the subsequent release of the D series Calcuttas about five years ago.

Exp, did all the different size Calcuttas go from A to B at the same time?  Do you know what year the original came out and what year they went from A to B?  Been trying to figure that out for the 50 and 100 size.  Thanks.

Hi Steve,

Shimano typically releases an entire revision of all models within a series at the same time.

Most of the Calcuttas I service are the 400 model.

The A series was originally released circa 1995 and was revised circa 1998.
The B series was released circa 2005.
