Artwork on anodized aluminum side plates?

Seeing all of the custom aluminum upgrades featured on this site (especially frames and side plates) in various colors, I can't help thinking about how beautiful it would be so see a Penn picture plate reproduced on an aluminum tail plate. Imagine a lighthouse scene etched into the side of a Cortez Conversions colored plate.

Engraving on an anodized surface mostly defeats the purpose of anodizing, protection-wise.  Maybe some kind of clear coat would be necessary.  I wonder how it would look to etch a plate before anodizing.   Some of the Accurate frames have the brand etched on them.
