285 Finessa

Hello everyone, I'm new here, I'm trying to replace the bearing on my 285 Finessa but after 24hrs in penetrating oil I still can not remove it from the housing. Anyone have any ideas on how to get it out?

Hi Jack, Welcome!

The easiest way when all else fails —- is to rethread the rotor hex nut onto the worm drive gear.

Then...turn the housing upside down with the front of the housing facing downwards.

Support the front of the housing on a couple of pieces of wood.

Next, put an open end wrench under and against the hex nut —- then strike the wrench with a hammer a few times —- it will come right out with the worm pinion.

Then to separate the bearing from the worm/pinion —- just drill a larger hole in a chunk of wood block —- and with a nylon-faced hammer —- just knock the worm pinion gear downwards to separate the two parts.

Soak the bearing in lacquer thinner for 30 minutes —- rinse with water, allow to dry, then relive with a good synthetic grease such as Super-Lube.

If the bearing is noisy, or loosely-goosey —- I can send you a new one.

Keep a rag or old towel under the parts when doing these operations so no damage occurs to the parts or the threads.

Yeah, Fred will have a suggestion or two when he comes along, (he posted while I was typing) but you can put a large fender washer ( or something similar) under the nut on the pinion (just thread it three or four threads) and support the fender washer on both sides of the body with the body suspended. Then tap the body (not the end of the pinion) lightly until the bearing comes loose from the body. You might, then, have to do a similar procedure to release the bearing from the pinion if it's stuck, there, too.

Hi Tom, thanks for the response, your images are of a 280 which I also have, on the 280 the back of the head is not part of the main frame which make it possible to use a fender washer, on the 285/330 the bearing is set inside the head so there is no clearance to try up on, this is my problem.

Couldn't really figure out why you couldn't get the bearing out with explanations by Tommy & me.

So I went through the process that I use for you.  But I did now see you got the bearing out using the method!  Congratulations!

For others who might need an explanation, here are a few photos of the process on a 285/330 with a stuck bearing.

Typically, if used in salt water, these need this process to remove the bearing —- and then, after cleaning with lacquer thinner —- the bearing may still need replacement if not tight and quiet.

Also, here is a new DQ 1001 cover.  $10.

Tapping the thin open wrench process on these type bodies is a much safer way to go rather than tapping on the body itself.

I have a 4" metal bar/strap with a hole in the center that I had laying around that I use. I support the ends on blocks of wood and just tap the body with something between the body & mallet until the bearing loosens up. Then I do the same process on the pinion if the bearing is stuck there, too.

No issues, Jack —-

The DQ's that sometimes have stuck bearings are mostly Finessa's & 270 Supers.

I always coat the outside of the bearings with synthetic grease like Super-Lube, Yamalube, or Cal's.  That way, when someone needs to service it a few years or decades down the road —- it pops out easily.
