Stradic 4000 FG oscillating slider

I am having trouble removing the oscillating slider, which will allow me to remove to the spool shaft and pinion gear. The spool shaft is held in by a retaining screw that for some reason is on the inside facing the right side plate so it can't be reached. I have removed everything but the worm gear, which is held in by the pawl. I have removed the pawl cover and washer but can't get the pawl out. I think if I can get the pawl out, I can flip the oscillating cover and take out the retaining screw. Does anyone know of a way to get the pawl out without damaging it, or if there is a better way to remove all of it? It seems like a design flaw to have the retaining screw facing inward, but maybe I'm missing something. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

do you have the rotor & ARB off?  as I recall,  FG disassembly can be started from sideplate, OR from rotor
then, pinion comes out & you can wiggle shaft & block out as a connected unit, then unscrew (may need to remove worm, first)
that's what the last person did, then installed screw backwards & wiggled shaft/block unit back in that way

I am not exactly sure what you are asking (or maybe understand the problem), but with all of the these Shimanos you can usually remove the oscillating slider bar(s), remove the pinion gear/pinion bearing/pinion collar (if has one) out the front, then wrestle the shaft with slider attached sideways and out rearwards.  Does that make any sense?

ARB is removed. I can't remove the pinion or shaft without removing the retaining screw, which faces the inside wall. I can't remove the worm gear because pawl is holding it in place and I can't flip the oscillating slide cover because of this as well.

did you remove everything on top?
pinion should come right out, unless top lg. pinion bearing is frozen in place
there is nothing to hold it in, except dirt/corrosion build-up
try gentler solvents, first...  then more aggressive -- nothing left to dissolve except paint

Yea, that top pinion bearing is really in there. I'm going to try spraying some WD40 when I get home to see if that loosens it up. However, removing the bearing and pinion still won't enable me to remove the shaft since it is still held in place by retaining screw. I took apart an older FE 4000 the other day and the internals were different than this, so I'm guessing the inward facing retaining screw was a change at this time.

get the BB & pinion out... you'll see -- plenty wiggle room
whole thing comes away from worm & down/side/out
THEN, you separate block from shaft

Yes remove everything up top. It will come out the bottom....

I finally got it. There was some gunk in the worm gear that kept the pawl sticking. A bit of WD40 got it to pop right out. Them the oscillating slide cover was fine, though it stuck a bit too. The top bearing that keeps the pinion seated took some force, but when it came out I saw why. The outer edge of the bearing has a good bit of corrosion. It irks me that I had this reel last serviced about a year ago but it seems the guy was only adding new grease to the old gunky stuff without taking it apart and cleaning it. I guess this is why it's best to do it yourself.

The bearing still spins fine but should I try to get a new one, or would I be fine just trying to get this off and reusing it? I'm not sure finding this one on an older reel like this would be easy

may work fine for use, but will continue to get stuck -- PITA for service
see if you can clean it up...  otherwise, very common, standard size -- plenty available

without checking, I think FG still uses the older, bigger line-roller bearing
THAT may be hard to find & usually 1st to fail, esp. in S/W
even if yours is still good, start thinking about that
