About 10 years ago, best recollection Alan wrote a tutorial on upgrading the charter special to get about 15lbs of drag.  I thought this would be great for salmon in AK as well as rockfish, lingcod, and small butts so I picked up 2.  I can't remember all the upgrades so I have been looking for that tutorial.  I am just trying to refresh my memory as I serviced them tonight and they looked new.  My best memory says I replaced the drag washer with a smooth drag washer, thicker bellvil washers, SS arm and power handle.

Can anyone point me to Alan's article on the upgrade.  I must be doing something wrong on the search.  TIA.

The good news is the upgrade worked.  I have boated a lot of fish over the years and they still work like new.  Rinse after every trip and service every 4 years whether they need it or not.  I find lighter drag is better than locking down.  Threaten family with swimming lessons if I see them touch the drag preset with fish on.

A carbontex drag upgrade is a must.  Do the standard bearing service.  I have a really nice handle upgrade, but only if the handle you have is in bad shape.  Switching outhe thin bellevilles for thicker ones will make the drag ramp up much more quickly.  Maybe too fast. And lastly there is a topless aluminum frame. It's a little overkill,  but it's very nice!
