I remember a southern Cal tackle shop (The Jig Stop) in the 1980's stripping the grease from the Shimano TLD bearings and replacing it with either transmission fluid or brake fluid.  I can't remember which.  It worked.

My son worked at the Jig Stop for a few years before it closed when the owner retired.

Another guy serviced the reels. I ended up with multiple tubs of Cal's grease, ReelX, etc after they closed. I used to get rods/reels/tackle at the employee prices and if they ordered a rod or something for me I payed whatever they got it for. I was sorry when they closed!

I remember one old guy there who had a long line of BS.  Maybe it wasn't all BS, but it was hard to tell.  Were they located in San Gabriel?
