Quote from: JasonGotaProblem on May 22, 2026, 11:12:03 AMMy brilliant 3rd grader son just got a nearly perfect score on his math and reading standardized tests so I wanted to do something special after the award ceremony they had at his school. So I checked him out and we went kayak fishing. He's only been out on his kayak twice and this was the first time fishing from it. We could have just gone kayaking, the fishing report would have been the same. But he was a lot more interested in the yak than the rod, and it was his day.

judging by his smile I bet he is having an awesome time

I finally stopped sucking at fishing for an hour or two

Nice! Must be in sweet water as I don't recognize those fish. Are they cooler fish or catch and release?

Jighead

Sweet, bass fishing is so fun in areas like this. Hopefully the mosquitoes didn't tear you up!

Gfish

Nice!
LMB were just made for sport fishing.
Fishing tackle is an art form and all fish caught on the right tackle are"Gfish"!

With the week I've had. I needed this. Beach was sargasso city but the river was surprisingly clear. 3 reds landed, I clouding a baby. one absolute monster broke off dockside on my very last shrimp after sawing me against the barnacles for a while. That was such an adventure I didn't even mind losing. I just wish he didnt leave with a hook and half a leader attached.

Boss: "hey do you wanna go grouper fishing with us on Wednesday?"

Some choices are easier than others.

Went with "Hudson beach sport fishing" and they were great. Dude was like a well oiled machine. Super professional and put us right on the fish, his equipment was good and his boat hauled ####. I kind of sucked compared to everyone I went with but I still had a ton of fun. They had fished in this way before. I haven't fished a spinner in a while. I landed a few small ones but only one of those keepers was mine. Someone else landed 3 so it worked out in the end. I still left with over 5# of filets.

Weather wasn't bad, seas were chill.

I know you told me the Captain used Stella reels can you elaborate on the rigging/bait.

JasonGotaProblem

Yeah he had bait traps that we went and picked up along the way out it was mostly pinfish and grunts, and a few other small reef fish. He put a new bait on for every cast regardless if it had been hit. Terminal tackle was what looked like a 9/0 hook with a weight that was likely less than a half oz right next to the hook with a short flouro leader. It seemed like nowhere near enough weight but we were never deeper than 30' of water, and the bait swam toward the structure on their own.

Deceptively precise, would be the term I'd use. He definitely had a system, and the system worked.

Sounds like his system is tried &
True.

The weight does seem light considering our Striper charter capt. uses a 1oz.egg on a carolina rig 15# line(3ft leader below swivel) & a wide bend size 4
hook.He says some like to set the hook,no circle hooks on his boat.
He uses 6500C3 exclusively on ugly stik elite rods & tells us how
Deep to fish, usually its a foot off
The bottom with blue back herring.
We always slay them.

MACflyer

Now that I looked closer, appears they are all gags. Sounds like a lot of fun using live bait, light weights, and spinning gear. Enjoy the eats!
