The 'M' is for metal spool, i.e. chrome over brass.  Most 309's had that spool but there are a few later aluminum spools.  They started that 'M' thing when there was a plastic spool option for the 109.

The red/brown side plates were used in the 1960's.  I don't know if the black came before that or after.
