I just picked one up off Flea Bay in pretty good shape.  I think if I get the old grease out, I'm good to go.

Probably will stop disassembly at the pinion.

Thinking I'll rinse it out with some WD-40 and re-grease?

Opinions? Experiences?

I see I've posted in the wrong forum.  Mods - feel free to move.

I am not at all familiar with these. But if it's full of old grease, why stop disassembly at the pinion? WD40 works but I like charcoal lighter fluid better.
Any machine is a smoke machine if you use it wrong enough.

Jason, may want to stop at pinion because it's an open BB
like REALLY OPEN...  search AT(Midway post?) for phrase "loose balls" (dozens ::) )

Balvar, try Dawn 3X/4X...  WD breaks down grease
ESPECIALLY NOT recommended for your intended partial service
unless you rinse/dry FOREVER, to get any WD residue completely out
water, alcohol, etc. -- any -ketone solvents like acetone will strip paint & melt plastic
if you need stronger solvent, wait for Tom or Fred to recommend something safe

I'm not a WD40 fan, I would never use it for anything. If you opt not to take it all the way down then give it a good cleansing with mineral spirits, or Original White Goop and a small brush or toothbrush after you've scraped all of the grease out with a tiny screwdriver or toothpick. Then give it a thorough wash with warm water & dawn and dry it well with compressed air. Be carefull not to lose any balls!  :o

As Phil said, acetone & lacquer thinner will eat the paint & melt plastic, but mineral spirits & Original White Goop are safe.
Love those open face spinning reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco Cardinals)
