Well when I bought it online, the pic showed the reel with the handle on the right side, which would be left handed, but the handle is supposed to be convertible. Well when I received it the 1st thing I tried to do was change the handle to the left side, but the handle will not thread into the sleeve on the left side. It's like the threads just don't match up with the handle. So since the handle threads into the right side perfectly fine I'm going to assume that the issue is the sleeve on the left side is mis-threaded. The 2 sleeves and main gear are made as 1 part, so that's the part I need.

The reverse "Crank Stem" is located inside the handle, under that large aluminum nut at the tail end of the handle stem.

Oh ok. Duh I had no idea that's the way it was made! I never even noticed that xtra little screw cap....I opened it up, found the reverse threaded bolt, switched it out, and it tightened right up!

Thanks so much for the info.....much appreciated!

The rod actually arrived the other day finally. So I put them back together like I originally bought them....with the handle on the correct side for RH users:

I was actually more interested in the rod when I made the purchase. It is, I believe, a 1st issue Ugly Stik from 1976.

With the cork handle, non-ceramic guides, and the "patent pending" stamp on it I assume it must be one of the earliest issue versions from 1976. I can't remember ever seeing the Ugly Stik until the ones with foam grips in the early '80s.

Does it have the unpigmented/clear tip area?
