Stranded Copper Wire

I will assume (most likely incorrectly) our East Coast fishermen might know the answer.  But was stranded copper wire ever used for wire line fishing?  I have a spool of it taken off a Penn 249 pre-war model with a plastic spool.

Never even thought about it till you posted this ......but it is still used today in trolling and has some interesting characteristics mentioned in this Link I had to Google to find out about Stranded Copper Fishing line . Getting EXPENSIVE !!!!

i have 4 copper setups on penn 49l mariners that i use for lake trout, 100'-300', there's about 200 yards of backing , then whatever length of copper line, depending on how deep you want to fish, then a 25'-50' leader. they'll run from 15' (100') at 2 mph to 90' (300') at 1.5. they are an old timey setup that was more popular before downriggers, but has made a comeback in the last ten years in the great lakes. i catch most of my fish on these.

I still have a spool of single strand copper and a few rolls of ss wire from long ago .
  It was the choice for trolling when i was a kid .
