The year was 1979.

And this reel should not exist.

A year earlier, DQ had introduced their new line-up of (6) Champion reels.  1000 thru 5000.

These reels had the new skirted spools and many other solidly over-built features.

However, in Europe, there were anglers who still wanted the traditional spinning spools that were completely encased within the rotating head (rotor).  And, they also wanted the ability of the new Champion Series to go far beyond their intended design ranges.

So what did DQ do?

They designed a complete hybrid type of reel that had the new adjustable line-lay spool, some of the features of the "N" series of reels, and many of the features of the new Champion series.

These were only for European distribution.

This reel weighs 25 ounces, has a large spool, and is specially engineered and reinforced.

High Speed at 1:4.

The line capacity conversion from Meters to Yards is: 506 yds of 10 lb mono, 275
yds of 15, 220 yds of 20,  and 124 yds of 30.

Phosphor cut bronze main gear with SS worm drive, fold down spring loaded crank, adjustable bail snap engaging from light to hard,

Here is a 440P, fully restored and serviced.

$145, and I will split the shipping.

So it will be $150 delivered to your door.

Beautiful reel Fred!
Very hard to resist.
Do you have a good supply of parts for the P series even though they were for European distribution?

Yes, since the parts are a hybrid of the best features of the "N", '01, and '02 series —- all parts are available.

The only exception would be the frame, spool, and the rotor —- since the bail trip mechanism needs to be activated by a "built up shoulder" hidden within the inner part of the frame.  The "P" uses a Champion type frame and a "N" style trip mechanism.

Looks like all of the other parts are standard DQ parts from various models.

This is a very unique reel.  This particular one has been very lightly used and is basically a prototype series of the best features of (3) various series of DQ's.

It has been fully disassembled, cleaned, all parts operate like oil on glass.  Every function is perfect —- and it is better than new —- and also ready to fish with modern synthetic lubes, new springs, new drags top and bottom.

It is a very capable reel for many types of large fish such as stripers, drum, reds, salmon, steelhead, lakers, mackinaws, muskie, pike — offshore, surf, rivers, lakes, and more.

It incorporates the best and strongest features of (3) generations of DQ's into one very effective package.

It is very impressive in features and operation.

Or it can go on the shelf.  It will only go up in value.
