How does a magnet work on an aluminum spool?

I thought it was eddy currents?

It's due to the Lenz law. The spool is affected by the magnetic field even though it isn't itself magnetic.

I have been using this for at least 20 years with huge success, but now you guys are confusing me.

When a conductive but non-magnetic object spins rapidly in a magnetic field a current is produced. But there's no such thing as free electricity (or we'd all be powering our houses with freespool). So this also results in a force opposite the direction of rotation. What you get is a braking effect that is only felt when the spool is spinning fast.
Any machine is a smoke machine if you use it wrong enough.
