max drag on Penn 550ss & 850SS

850SS gets about 11# stock. If you swap the teflon disk for a 3rd carbon you can get that up to 15# if you purchase bryan's kit you get 25#

Any machine is a smoke machine if you use it wrong enough.

Note, some parts for these reels are getting hard to fund, so take a little care amping the drag up way past their intended drag limits without seeing if you need to upgrade anything else. That said, they are tanks and will handle a whole dang lot as-is. I have several Gen 5 and 6 versions NIB, and the VII is now out, but my SS's from the 90's will simply not quit. Bail spring here or there and grease every decade or two. :) I don't know I'd put 25 lbs of drag on a 30 year old aluminum gear. The bronze gears? Yeah, I use those grouper fishing with 80 braid. 


Needed an AR dog for 550SS rebuild for a buddy- it was Unobtanium, but Fred had it :)
