I pulled apart my MXL today for a good cleaning.
I see a lot of folks removing the bearing seals.
Some bearing are small. My question is do you
guys remove the seals on the very small bearing?
I could not get the seals off but I did manage to
ruin the bearing. On a good note the reel now has
another new bearing.LOL

sorry, yes, that small bearing is a real pain.  i can usually get the races out without trouble, but once in a while i get one that does not cooperate.  older bearings are worse.
send me an email at alantani@yahoo.com for questions!

On those really smaaaal bearings from Avet I use a sewing needle to work the seal off.
this only works for those plastic seals.

That's a great suggestion Jim.  I use a fine dental pick that I grind down to a needle point.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

For grease and if you are using "bearing packer", you need not remove the shield.

If you are oiling the bearing, just soak them in oil with the shield and it'll be fine.

agree with you alan, really a PITA to work with. took me a while to remove the seal but was able to do it with a fish hook. now the spool rotates smoother...tight lines.
