Hi all! Been a long time. I recently purchased an eBay 265 Microlite that was listed as a parts reel because of a broken bail trip lever and everything else was supposed to be okay. Unfortunately it has other issues. Looks like at some point something got caught up in the gears or someone gripped or tried to jam the gears, but anyway the worm drive at least is toast. Has all kinds of bumps and even will catch and stop completely every now and then when reeling. I've already got in contact with Fred for his opinion. I just hate to see this as this is my absolute favorite DAM Quick reel. Hopefully I'll be able to get her breathing again.

Since you also shared with me that the steel roller that connects the crosswind gear to the oscillation slider was replaced with a piece of copper tubing...

My guess is that when someone had the reel open for servicing —- the tiny steel roller became loose when reassembling and not double checking for proper placement and operation.

The slide and reel will work OK for a while without the steel roller.

However, as soon as the little steel roller finds its way in between (and it will) the gear teeth on the worm-pinion & the main gear —- it will chew gouges. 

Someone could not find the steel roller because it was either not easily visible or stuck in the grease.  So they substituted a piece of copper or brass tubing and went fishing.  It worked OK for a while —- then the steel roller showed up between the gears —- and they just kept cranking until damage occurred.

Or, the damage occurred after opening up the reel —- and they figured it out —- and subbed the copper tubing.  Either way, it happened.

If one knows these reels after working on thousands —- then one can just use the principle of Occam's Razor to determine the probable cause.

Which, in essence states that the simplest solution is generally the culprit.

Might have been something else —- but doubtful.

I actually had something similar happen with a pellet grill i bought a couple of years ago. The auger was jammed and when I finally opened up the gear box I found a plastic spacer used in the gearing somewhere and an extra one had fallen in the grease and was jammed in the teeth. Luckily it was plastic and the auger runs extremely slow.

  Fred I believe you Nailed it .  I have come across reels that the spool free play in and out like .080 thousands only to find the roller in the bottom of the crank case .    Or the guy who missed the pin and bearing altogether and snapped the slider
