I have an old Penn 650SS  bail wire is out of shape and catches on reel handle? I have spent more time than I care to admit trying to reshape it. Any hints or ideas? I am don't want to ruin it as it would cost more than I am willing to pay to get one off of eBay. It's an obsolete part
Thx

here is your schematic.  https://www.mysticparts.com/Assets/images/pennparts/schematics/650ss.pdf

the bail wire is 24-650.  leave the side with the line roller alone.  unscrew the other side of the bail wire.  this side is not spring loaded.  the bail wire on that side is held in place with a large knurled threaded round nut.

ok, this is the tricky part.  you've gotta bend it back.  yeah, bend it back to what?  you've gotta bend it back into it's original shape.  this is going to seem immensely unhelpful, but when the bail wire is back in its original shape, the knurled nut will line up perfectly so that there is minimal tension on side with the line roller.  in this way, the bali arm spring (key #32) will easily flip the bail wire from the open to the closed position.  if the bail wire is all mangled, you can force the knurled nut onto the rotor (key #27), but it will not easily close.

also (and this is the other half of the problem), the bail wire will not longer hit the reel handle.  oh, and the reel handle is not bent, correct?  careful here.  if the handle is bent and you try to bend it back, the cheap pot metal handle arm could easily snap.

all good in theory, huh.  you've probably tried all of this before.  we've all been stuck like this.  after a while, this type of thing gets personal.  it's tough getting beaten by a fishing reel that is probably older than you are.  just remember that it did work at one point.  the answer is in there, somewhere.

please keep us posted.   :-\

If he doesn't have one I probably do. But he's probably faster about shipping.

Find a picture of one NIB and use as a guide for how the bail should be configured. Just take your time and have a couple of smooth or covered jaw pliers and keep working with the bail bending and adjusting it until it resembles the NIB look and passes the reel handle consistently. Bent bails are common place on spinning reels, especially when they get thrown and banged around. I've seen some pretty bad ones over the years but have never had one that I couldn't get bent back to original shape. It just takes some time and persistence.

No worries. Thx for the offer.  I will figure it out.  Just a matter of pride trying to get the old reel working. Might through some line on it and use it for nostalgia

I know. But for a reel I used hard for years , no badges etc I am not sure it worth putting money in to.  I have cleaning and doing maintenance on reels since I torn tendon in my elbow so I haven't been able to fish yet.  I have been gathering reels from drawers, cabinets and shelves.  I had know idea I had over 50 reels.  The 650 750 and 550 were the first 3 reels I bought when I started saltwater fishing. I had always been a trout stream guy!!

Might also want to make sure that the rotor is snug to the shaft.  A very slightly loose rotor caused the bail to handle arm knock for me once.

Interesting. I noticed the bail wire on my 750SS just barely hits the screw that holds the aftermarket knob in place. Maybe my rotor is a hair loose. God this feels like the textbook definition of first world problems.

To not spend any money —- and to get it back in fishable condition...

Like Alan & Tommy said —- just bend the bail back into as close as possible shape to original —- then also make sure that you have the crank handle spacer washer in place.

As long as the bail is freely operating and the handle spacer washer is there —- it is done.
