So when you've got kids or I guess probably grandkids too, certain parts of the yard just stay dead. And that's ok, the yard is first and foremost for playing. The spot at the base of a slide and below a swing are perfect examples. It's becoming an issue though because my 18mo daughter always lands on her butt and playing outside guarantees at minimum a change of clothes and sometimes a bath. I don't wanna do mulch there. So I said why not put down something that won't die. And I went with artificial turf. I put it under the fort and below the slide because that's always dead anyway. I'm gonna put it under the swing too but I need to add some fill sand first.
Seeing the color difference I also fertilized my lawn tonight.

And of course that adorable little scoundrel didn't know what the surface was, didn't initially trust this new thing, and is now landing on her feet every time she comes down the slide.

Perfect.

When my kids were little we lived in a house that had a small backyard (like 15'x15') it was fenced in with a small concrete porch and the rest was artificial turf. It was perfect for the littles. They could come and go from the house as they pleased without messing up their clothes or the house.
