Hi
I found another penn 4400ss problem on a newer model. An old thread by me showed rachet system using fingers to prevent anti reverse.
This system uses a spring. I don't know where it sits and bites into ? I suspect end broken as compared to mystic part picture.

Friction ring design. Early 'silent' AR.
There's a lip I think on the bottom side of the ratchet that the round part of that (to my eye, intact) spring rests with the pointy part face up. The pointy part goes in thru the dog from the bottom. No oil or grease. As the reel is rotating the AR dog is out of the path of the ratchet. When the rotor starts turning backward the friction between the ratchet and the wire makes pulls the dog into the path of the ratchet and stops the rotor from turning any further.
Any machine is a smoke machine if you use it wrong enough.

Jason is dead on, ditto from me. Sometimes a small "adjustment" to the spring. Good luck!

There was lots of grease on rachet and spring.

Cleaned it up and the anti reverse spring and dog combination came back. Reel is a little noisy but everything works
