SPOOLS, A Couple of Things,

I've been going over my reel arsenal now that I've reduced the volume to a-little less on the collector side of things, and much less on the user side. I rehabbed the users 2 years ago without de-lining them. A few days ago I started the de-lining process, addressing some fine tuning issues and doing some surface(not complete disassembly)lubrication.
Out of 8(with 5 still left to go), 2 have major saltwater corrosion spots and 1- had minor damage. Only 2-had metal spools, those were fine. The damage was on aluminum spools.
So maybe best to check aluminum spools every 6 months or so.

Long-shot question: any opinions on the best aluminum spool makers for corrosion avoidance?

I would have to vote for Penn or Newell for corrosion avoidance as far as moderately  priced reels, IMHO. Granted, I fish more Penn and Newell than anything else, so go figure.

I finally took the line out from the ProGear 545 which I got from our loved Bryan Young, line seemed in good shape but I didnt knew how old it was, so I took it out to install some fresh line.

seems that it was in a perfect timing because the spool had lots of salt build up, it was still easy to clean up, carefully with a knife tip I took all the salt build-up and cleaned the rest with soap and bit of vinegar just to be sure, the spool got cleaned really nice, no signs of corrosion anyway uffff !!

so, I put a the knot on the spool base, a brush of yamaha grease on the spool and installed the line, it should be good for 2-3 seasons

Aluminum is third on the galvanic scale behind Magnesium and Zinc, as a sacrificial metal.  It is wise to pay more attention to those spools than the chromed bronze.

Gee, thanks Mark, your technical expertise and ability to correct horrific, major mistakes like that is vital to this site and makes it a better forum. I should have posted "chromed brass" instead of metal. My bad...
