After https://alantani.com/index.php/topic,39809.0.html, the rebuilding of the reel fundamentally followed Alan's and AlohaDan's tutorials:

The one mod I made was to drill out the Penn factory knob and installed an Alan Tani 5/0 Delron one off of one of my Daiwa 600H's. Was able to set Strike to 31 lbs, going to Full kept snapping the braid that came with the reel even after removing a good length, which convinced me it was something less than 80lb that the seller thought was on it...maybe 50lb would be my guess. So "OFF!" it was:

With all the remaining line transferred to an Okuma MA-45DX, found the Arbor had a wrapping in...

...masking tape, now that's a new one I never seen before, but now I also can't say that ever again.

Removng the masking tape, revealed there was no salt damage/corrosion anywhere on the spool ;D

I chose to go with a more "traditional" finger tape around the arbor:

Next was 100+yds of yellow Suffix 100lb for backing:

Then the 6' hollow core connector, 3' for the Suffix and 3' for the 380 yds of 100lb ProSpec Metered transferred from my Quantum Cabo 120. Suffix first...in then out at 18" and back in for the remaining 18":

Marked where the hollow core tag end reached and then marked 2" from there for the nub position:

Nail knot "nub" tighten on the Suffix and inserted into the hollow core:

The tag end then got two consecutive nail knots

The "lock nail knot" was then cinched down up against the "nub":

The final configuration:

...the same was done on the ProSpec end of the connector. Each knot section then got a drop of Super Glue.

Line transferred:

The 20-30 yds topshot of 100lb mono will be connected before trip.

Retesting with known 100lb line, bellevilles configured (()), and Strike = 31lbs, got the following:

  • 1/2 way between Strike and Full: 38 lbs
  • Full: 48 lbs

With the 16VSX thus configured, and accompanied with its cousin, the Fathom 60LD Gen1, I should be ready for the July 5-8 SOA BFT trip... ;)

The "family" photo:

A small, simple bit of Bryan Young's legacy is included...the two line-pullers on the right side were a set he made (one set for everyone on that particular SOA trip that he also was on). They are integral to the nail knots I tie.

Hi, my name is Lee and I have a fishing gear problem.

I have all of the answers, yup, no, maybe.

Tedious but we'll worth the effort.   :d
It may not be very productive,
but it's sure going to be interesting!

Thank you for the idea!!   When I cleaned and serviced my new to me 16vsx I put it back in the stock configuration ()() and did get 42 lbs at full as Penn advertises. An additional few pounds would make sense to make it closer to a 100lb reel.  I'm going to be taking it apart and exploring (()).  When you changed the orientation of the drag did you have to add anything for the height due to the change?

The (()) was how I got the reel. It's also a config that Alan mentioned in one of his International posts here. To compensate for stack height loss try a variant of ((()) or (()))
