why no anti- reverse?

was looking at a Shimano Vanford, fit the bill i was looking for weight wise
but then found out no anti-reverse; is this just a fresh-water reel thing?

It probably has an infinite A/R bearing with no manual switch.

Many companies have moved away from the Anti-Reverse (A/R) switch and gone to an A/R bearing instead.  Less parts and less expensive to produce. 

Also smoother —- however the A/R bearing will typically be one of the first things to fail after a few large fighting fish hookups.

I have vanford Ive been using for surf fishing for a couple years. I don't dunk it and rinse it well after every outing. It's a pleasure to fish with. 
4000 size with 12lb mono. It was a demo model I got a good deal on it so if it dies I won't be crying goo much. You'll like it

I think we might have a confusion of terms here. Those reels very definitely have what is usually called "anti-reverse" as in, they don't turn backwards. I suspect you might be referring to the switch that lets you disable the anti-reverse?

It doesn't turn backwards if that's what you mean. My saragosa doesn't either. Can't say I miss it

I have lost fish when a/r got switched off inadverdantly.Always on is better than losing fish

I wouldn't go that far, but I also like having one, and use it often. Plus, on old reels it turns off that annoying click sound!

I bought 5 of Bryan Young's collection. All non-greenie Spinfishers. Pleasantly surprised at the build quality; a 710Z, 2-SS-00 series and 2-SS-000 series. Heavy reels for their size. Looking inside made me think they were trying to give DAM Quick a run for the money.

The SS reels all have 2-switches, a standard AR at the bottom of the gear box like on the old Daiwa's and another on the top-front, underneath the rotor. The 2nd-top switch gives you an option to turn-off the anti-reverse clicker while the AR is engaged. Over-engineered genus! You just have to get used to 2-switches.

I was gifted a modern Penn spinner, that has always-on antireverse. I detest, abhor, and repudiate this idea ;-)
The A/R bearings as Fred says, are failure prone, difficult to source parts, and unpleasant to remove and install, usually requiring some kind of special tool or homebrewed bearing press. Just another reason why I prefer vintage reels..

The DAM Quick 111 SLS has a 3-position AR switch. The antireverse has 3 settings - off (green), silent (yellow), and buzzy (red).. it's slick.

I don't like an AR on a spinner for the same reason I don't like an AR on a baitcaster.  If the quarry is finicky or habitually wants to kill its prey before swallowing, then you need to be able to give it some slack immediately.

I have not run into any modern spinners that do not have an anti reverse of some sort. Like was has already been said.  If it has a switch to allow no anti reverse, switch it the other way and see if it now has an anti reverse.  If not then you have a problem.  Depending on what type anti reverse you have, it could be a lot of things.  However if you have only an anti reverse bearing and no switch, that makes it simple.  Sometimes that bearing gets grease and oil into it and stops it from working and a good clean can bring it back.  Sometimes the bearing is no good and to replace it is quite easy. Just be careful when cleaning the bearings not to knock the loose.  Sometimes it is a hassle getting them all back in.  Check the schematic first though.

Shimano makes a good AR bearing situated underneath the rotor on the top of the pinion. That's the best place for it, that I can think-of. They have steel roller springs(insteada plastic) and an on/off switch. No silent AR vs click AR option though.
