That's interesting and sort of thought-provoking Jason.  I have never touched, much less used, much less owned a Van Staal.  But, I seem to have drunk the Cool-Aid and believed what the secret society of Van Staal owners profess.  But, thinking about that, maybe they do not profess anything.  They just let the crazy price speak for itself.

Penn has their Authority spinning reels on sale right now; looks like about 40% off. Never fished, or even handled, one but they sure look and sound nice.

Two rules on the boat
1. Fish where the fish are
2. See rule #1

Gfish

2nd for the Authority recommendation. But not based on anything other than the review and that Penn is probably my best bet for the quality/price ratio of quality.
Fishing tackle is an art form and all fish caught on the right tackle are"Gfish"!

Van staal is way to flashy for the Dominican republic,,, ;) i took my tongue5 on a cruise and the look from the locals and there's places in the us too,,,you need a sleeper to fish,,,,,, ;D

Also what's the parts and service scene like down there? I hadn't thought about that
Any machine is a smoke machine if you use it wrong enough.

I'd love to suggest a custom colored Zeebaas. Only problem is, there's up to a two year Wait on custom colors. Know of a few guys, who are still waiting at the two year mark. There are some other gorgeous, looking reels out there now. Visser, IRT, VanStaal. Then there's custom anodizing and engraving, that could be done as well.

After 45 years of service you should get a Shimano Stella 14000 SWD and a CTS Inshore rod.

I think you may have an extra "1" in front of "4000". Unless your inshore fish look like Giant Trevally, in which case, absolutely perfect  :d
