I want to get a nice plank of wood and use my router and some varnish to turn it into a nice plaque-type display for a 100yr old rod and reel combo. I wanna hang it on the wall at my office, my wife has already shut down the idea of mounting at home.

How would you guys go about mounting a rod to a display like that? Ideally without irreversibly damaging the rod by driving a screw through it or something.

I was thinking curtain rod mounting hardware. What am I missing?

Jason - Since it already appears you are comfortable with wood working, why not make some hooks/cradles out of the same wood as the plank that the rod/reel can rest/hang in?  All of my stuff in the garage hangs in bicycle hooks, but tthat is more utilitarian and certainly not elegant for a display - but maybe same principle? - john

I'd consider hanging it on some large fish hooks.

I would hang it in my home and let my wife get over it.  :d

The basic idea ,or use the others instead of fish head/body .  Two reels or hand winders .

I like this idea. Old Pflueger or Mustad hooks

I think I'm gonna build some brackets for the horrocks & ibbotson rod out of wood. I bought a James e Clark squid lure and I already have a minty cozzone reel from Keith. I bought a spool of cuttyhunk line, and got some gut leader.  The rod and reel are 1920s the lure is 30s but of a style used for a while before that, the line is 30s. I need to learn what type of "braid" to leader knots people used back then. Trying to (within reason) get it right.

I bought a red oak plank, and I'm gonna torch it and sand it before I take the router to the edges.

Now I just need to refurb the rod.

Copper pipe saddles. Bonus points if you can get some patina on them.
