Hi everyone, hope your all keeping well, I recently picked up 40 Mitchell reel, most of them are 486 & larger up to 499 know pro`s amongst them unfortunately.
the question I have, what name do you give the reels with the one arm, not the bail arm models.
I will need a couple of sets of main gears & pinions. some of them that I have service, have come up really smooth, its amazing, how much sand gets right down into the bearings, even when they are enclosed very good around the bearings, I will also need 8 or 9 handles. cheers Don.

Don, I think it's PUM, for Manual Pick-up, without bail. I have a half-dozen or so 488/486's. They retrieve a lot of line fast.

Donnyboat

Thanks for your reply, I thought they were turning quite fast, compared with the bail are reels, cheers Don.

another question about these large Mitchell reels, with these reels, there is 4 handle & were the thread screws into the main gear shaft, there is a double lot of thread, I think they are both left hand thread, cheers Don.

Sorry one thread is left hand & the other is right hand, and the handle is flat not round, cheers Don.

The 400 series reels are the higher retrieve 300 series. The "flat" handle you are referring to, is that the grasp?? The 486 should have the round "ball" knob about 1 1/2" in diameter. Easier cranking the lure and bringing in the fish.

the 400 series handles is stronger than 300 series ,I often got broken handles on 300 series and lots on 300A
