Its that time of year again in puget sound. The coho mass migration coming in from the ocean to return to their river and spawn. The biggest run comes from the river just blocks from my home. We call them hooknose, cause the male coho develop a knarly hooked nose and lower jaw as they near their home river.

They really are gourmet table fare.

Heres a shot of the hooknose from a 11 pounder, and a screenshot of my sonar screen as I'm fishing, and a pic of the tail that shows this big hooknose escaped the jaws of a seal

Coho are my second favorit salmon to eat, sockeye are by far the best.
Hi, my name is Lee and I have a fishing gear problem.

I have all of the answers, yup, no, maybe.

Hey Ted,

Looks like you were a better angler than the seal, and your sonar shot is crazy! You'll have to do a surf and turf with your wonderful Prime Rib.  8)

We peasants in Kalifornia are only aloud to fish Salmon when our overlords say we can, until an imaginary quota gets caught, and they close it again.

Buy it nice or buy it twice.

You could always move to a place that allows more fishing opportunities..... just saying. If kalifornia is so bad I wonder why so many people live there. Be happy with what you have or do something about it. I love BC, not everything,  but not enough to move

I'm sure Ted could complain about Washington regulations .... but he lives with what he has.... even though the chinook opportunities are limited due to political reasons.

Sorry  .... rant over

Yup. Salmon in the lower 48 have so many limiting factors. The fishery biologists have to guesstimate the yearly numbers, then make recommendations to the politicians. No one is satisfied. Maybe someday there will be a prohibition of taking any Salmon species. Or, how about we make B.C. our 51'st State? It would be alota years of good fishing before we ruined that too... kidding, Todd.
Fishing tackle is an art form and all fish caught on the right tackle are"Gfish"!

Forecast returns for 2025 Sacramento River fall-run Chinook (the only remaining salmon population of any size in California) is 165,000 fish.  The rec quota is 7,000, mostly to provide some hope to keep us recreational fishermen engaged. We are the allies of the biologists in the battle to save the salmon from extinction.

While I share your disappointment, the fishery management guys are not the enemy (some are even members here). We are looking at an extinction event with so few returning salmon.  What do you think the quota should be?  Or maybe no quota and everybody gets to decide for themselves?  How would that work out?

Without going too far down into politics, I would suggest directing your ire toward the push to maintain and even increase Sacramento River water diversions for corporate agriculture.  By all credible accounts, this is the biggest threat to the salmon in California.

I like living California with a "C".  Just too many people here nowadays.  It was nicer when there was a smaller population.
