Penn 80VSW Stuck In Free Spool

This past weekend while reeling it completely locked up. Could not turn the handle at all and could not move the lever drag.

Took it apart yesterday and wasn't being careful so the springs fell out of the handle side when removing the cover. So I could not see if anything was misaligned before I popped it apart. I do not see anything broken.

Spool spins freely without handle side on.

I put everything back together and now its stuck in free spool but everything moves. I can adjust the drag lever and turn the handle but spool just spins. Even with the pre-set maxed and drag lever up it still in free spool.

I went through the parts diagram and looks like everything is there. Just hoping I'm missing something thats common.

Also side note I have an electric motor hooked up to it. I'll try get some pics its probably not common to most as its made in Hawaii. But motor is attached to the opposite side of the handle. Hole is drilled through the housing and a little "T" screws into the the shaft from that end. "T" side is what the motor turns. The motor works and spins with or without the reel so I don't think its what holding up the reel.

it's gotta be something in backwards, upside down or just out of order.  make sure that the lever moves the pinion bearing in and out.

I'll double check but don't explain why it just froze on its own while reeling.

Well I took it back apart again and the drag holds now.

Only thing I can think of is this cam gear worn down? I know the big groove is to hold the ears so it can spin.

But looks like it has some wear. This is the only penn I own rest is shimano and I'm pretty sure theirs is smooth all the way.

Hard to see but there is the big groove that fits the ears and the little groove next to it is smaller and won't fit. I'm thinking it shifted somehow causing a bigger gap and the drag won't engage.


Sorry should of taken more pics but I really don't want to take it apart again.

Well I found some pics of the cam online and it looks the same.

So no idea but it works now.
