The 322 arrived, a little OLD dried up line on it, plenty of boat rash and almost completely dry inside, one little dollop of dried up white grease and that was it. It's on the desk next to the Cheetah 500 with the new bail springs installed.

Reels like that $5 one are good to me for learning on. There's different ways to adjust the line lay for example, but if you make a irreparable mistake, oh well...

Agreed. There's something beguiling about finding a working reel for $5 or $10, it's like a pulled a fast one on society. And, like you said, if it's a dud, either keep it for parts or toss it and forget about it.
