Ok so I have 2 Penn 9/0 senators one in good shape and the other is a parts reel. I'm combining them along with an older tiburon frame and Cortez conversions side plates but I've run into a problem. I have an older chrome spool in it but when I try to turn it. The it doesn't spin unless I back the clicker side bearing way out. But then after that it has a lot of side to side and up and down play with a bit gap between the spool and frame. Do I need to switch it to a newer aluminum spool? I tried to take photos to show the play in spool. One is pulled to tail side of reel and the other is pushed to the handle side.

You may need to put shims behind the handle side bearing.

Where would I get the shims from?

Tom cortez conversions.  But to tell you whats wrong it would have to be in front of me. The problem could be on the clicker side. Sometimes the spool shaft does have a shoulder for the bearing to butt up against. That may need a shim depending on how the spool centers in the frame.

If you have a second spool, see if that also gives you the same issue. It might show up slight differences in the spools - it's a problem I once found when putting two 12/0 back together where the spools were not interchageable without a lot of fussing with shims.

I had wanted to put the better spool into the other reel but it proved too much trouble and once full of line you couldn't tell anyway.

Good luck!

I replied to your PM a minute or so, but just for general knowledge, my plates are designed around the newer bearing style spools, not the older bushing ones. The spool shafts are different.

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.-Sal

got it thank you, I'll change it to the aluminum spool I have and it should fix the issue

I thought Tom would had the answer. So you probably have a older reel spool.
