I have always liked underspin reels for casting jigs, but they wouldn't last very long for various reasons. The Daiwa US40-XD is smooth but the A/R would be flakey & the front drag knob is in the center of the cover where the line comes out this also causes issues from time to time. So I sold 2 like new US40-XD reels to get a Daiwa 14 size 80. It has rear drag & the A/R works consistently. Apparently it is a Japan model the manual is in Japanese with no schematic. This reel doesn't show on the US site. The handle came mounted for right hand retrieve which I swapped over.

If you want a quality underspin that will last keep your eye out for a decent Swiss Record 700. They were also sold with an H-I badge on the side.

Love those open face spinning reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco Cardinals)
