BG 3000 Anti-Reverse Skipping

9 times out of 10, when having intermittent A/R issues —- whether it is an ARB or a dog —- it is dried/stiff lubricants causing the issue.

Generally just a good cleaning and service takes care of the problem.

I think the BGs only have the backup anti-reverse in the larger reel sizes.

The cold could stiffen up the grease/oil preventing the rollers in the clutch bearing from disengaging. My take on how it is designed to work is the rollers misalign in the race when forced to go the opposite direction causing it to lock up. If put away with these stuck in place and the clutch lever not engaged the bearing may just be letting go as it thaws out. Maybe or maybe not LOL.

Another update. The reel in question continues to operate properly with no further ARB slipping. While bailing mahi recently with plenty of drag pullage there has been no ARB slippage. As a recap, no parts were replaced. The only action taken was to remove excess lubrication (corrosion-x) from the inside of the ARB using a dry q-tip.

As an aside, I did have the same problem with a smaller BG2000 earlier this year. In that case, the reel was inadvertently dunked while unhooking a fish so the ARB got wet. Once the ARB was dried out the problem disappeared.

What I learned from all of this is that at least in the Daiwa BG reels, the ARBs function optimally when dry of all oil and or water.

Hopefully this helps someone else in the future.

Yeah that's probably the best compromise for the ARB as you found—-applying a thin coat of Corrosion-X to the pins and clutch sleeve, giving it a few good spins, then wicking most of it off.

They are not supposed to be lubed at all if you want them to consistently work properly.

They are not supposed to be lubed at all if you want them to consistently work properly.

Yeah it's pick your poison with these BG ARB's that love to corrode in the salt.

The sleeve develops pitting and the pins rolling over it make it worse.. $:-\$

Haven't had any problems with backspin though—-using only Corrosion X and applying as duckboat describes.

That's why I avoid instant anti-re erase type spinning reels. Never had an issue with a standard A/R style reel other than maybe a couple of worn or chipped dawgs on a couple of well used and abused older vintage pinion notched reels.
