I stumbled on what is described as a NIB President II 2860 DE, the largest of the President II spinning reel series. It's being shipped and should arrive in a few days. I'm not a huge fan of NIB reels because I hate to "break the seal" such as it is and start using them, but if there is sign that it was ever fished, I'm surely going to put it in rotation. Pics will follow once I receive it.

Oh yeah, and lots of "never or un used" with lots of nicks and scratches on the reel foot.  :o  ;)
Love those open face spinning reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco Cardinals)

Also "ready to fish" doesn't always mean same...

This is true. If I'm being frank I prefer reels with some patina, I don't feel bad about using them. I only paid $35 for it so as long as it's decent I'm cool with that.

It arrived in the box with warranty card, instruction manual, the tool and a little bottle of Garcia-labeled Silicote reel oil. Per a note on the box it is spooled with 200 yds of 25 lb line but beyond that it appears unused. There is no paint loss anywhere, and aside from the box smelling a little musty it is intact.

Very nice looking reel. If you can find or print a new cover for the box, that would make the box look equally nice as well.

Here's the dilemma...the box smells musty and I generally don't care about packaging and warranty cards and whatnot, but since the reel looks like it may have never been hung on a  rod, do I use it or not? I generally don't have shelf queens but this one one may become just that. Gotta figure out a way to kill the odor of that box though.

Start with a dehumidifier for drying out the box. That should kill most of the odors.

If you lived in AZ, NV, or UT you could leave it out on the porch, not true for OH or FL.

The box looks to be intact, so not much you need to do in that respect.

If you do decide to recover the box and were inclined to pass it along to some collector or person looking to sale the item, leave evidence that the box was recovered. Don't try to deceive future observers into thinking the cover was original.

I have about 13 percent humidity in the house in OH right now, it should dry out quickly. It smells like my grandmother's basement when I was a kid. I can't imagine trying to restore the box, I'll just leave it as-is, with honest patina.
