If I were switching out parts I would keep the main gear with the same pinion and main shaft combo that it came with. That way the amounts of wear should all correspond with each other.
I think that is what I may end up doing. Then it will be a 65 body with a 64 engine.

That's what should be done if one has the option to do it. Mixing the mechanical drive train parts from different reels usually doesn't end up with the smoothest possible product.

Tommy, I had so much trouble getting the pinion and bearing out of the first one I worked on I was going to be lazy, especially since I couldn't even get the rotor off the second reel for a day and it also had the stuck bearing issue. Anyway persistence and hours of soaking them with WD-40 and or PB Blaster along with some elbow grease eventually worked for both problems. I guess this is part of the price for tight tolerances?

Hey Guys,

We're closing in on this. But need more helpful ideas. 2062 put together and gears working smoothly and as it should in both directions. Used pinion, main gear, lever arm screw and washer from donor reel (Thanks Fred). Decided to use original axle because seemed slighly straighter. As long as I turn everything by hand it is smooth as butter.  But when I put on handle (from either reel) with or without spacer washer the handle locks up and won't turn. Issue also happens with or without side plate on. Tried all combos several times. Again everything turns freely both ways when I turn by hand. I'm mystified and need some wisdom.

First question , do you have a shim between gear and housing ?
Does the shaft stick out a little on the handle side or is recessed ?

Are the handle washer in place ?

Hopefully you secured the bearing and tightened down the rotor nut all the way before inserting the main gear, otherwise the pinion and main gear teeth may be slightly misaligned and binding. Also, sometimes the side plate needs to be installed to keep the main gear from moving sideways and binding the two gears.

I just bought an EF arriving this week along with a 2200. I read the 2200 rotor nut has left hand threads,is the 2062 the same?

Is the side plate on or off when this happens, seems like if it's handle related it might be something horizontal? Thicker handle washer maybe.

Did anyone answer what the black stuff is on the side plate?

I have seem side plate orientation on a Mitchell 300 cause them to bind, but not lock up.

Hey guys,
Am taking a Super Bowl day away from reels. Will take pics and try all your suggestions tomorrow. Do have a main gear shim but can try a thicker one. Still don't get (not doubting but not undrstanding the theory) why I can turn main gear shaft with fingers but not handle. One thing I do know after taking 2062s apart and back together over the last week is that rotor nut = right hand thread and lever arm screw = left hand thread. Happy Sunday!

QuoteStill don't get (not doubting but not undrstanding the theory) why I can turn main gear shaft with fingers but not handle.

Because if the pinion/rotor and nut weren't torqued down tight prior to inserting the main gear the main gear can move slightly in and out and compensate for misalignment of the main gear teeth to the pinion gear teeth. When the crank handle is installed it will prevent the main gear from moving in and out, so if the gear teeth are misaligned it will be noticable right away.

Remove the oscillation arm, main shaft and main gear and make sure the rotor nut is torqued down tight. Then install the main gear. You'll probably have to turn the rotor a little so that the main gear falls right down into place. Then insert the main shaft and install the oscillation arm. The 2062 does not have, or need, a washer or shim on the shaft between the body and crank handle. The shim/washer goes on the main gear shaft between the A/R ratchet gear and the body.
