I stumbled upon a Dam Quick 2002 at a yard sale over the weekend. It was on an old Olympic rod, all in good shape but a little dirty for $20. I haven't popped it open but the gearing feels remarkably solid, in spite of the evident drag from dried up grease. I'll get it cleaned out right away. My question: Should I be on the hunt for an aluminum spool from a 2001? Or do these graphite spools hold up ok with reasonable care? I'm cool with braid and would consider throwing some Fireline on it if needed.

Never seen one break, but if you want a metal one, I have one.

Good find and Fire line also a good choice

I tore into it this evening and just as I suspected--dried grease. I think this reel will clean up fine, and it will be catching fish right away. Takedown was a breeze, I even got to play with my c-clip pliers for the first time in awhile.

Fred, I am interested in the metal spool. It'd be nice for mono, and just to have a spare. Let me know how much it'd cost to procure and ship!
