Why are the main bearings behind the spool only shielded on one side? Wouldn't a double shielded, lubed for life bearing be better? They are used in in many pump and fan industrial applications without incident! Your thoughts?

I can think of a few.

Place the bearing with the shield facing out to keep debris from getting in. A single shield is easier to clean, inspect and lube thoroughly. Cost to the manufacturer is probably a consideration. Personal preference of the owner. Some folks like no shields, some want two, some want one. Still others want sealed bearings - one seal, two seals. Let experience teach you what best suits your needs.

So we are all going to get royalties from Google, right?

Just for fun, I just asked the search engine AI a question about Old Florida fly reel history and got a slightly garbled regurgitation of my own post on this subject.

The problem is that the AI mines everything and doesn't know how to separate the high quality/post from the junk.

It is only going to get worse as people use AI results in new posts, which will in turn be consumed by AI.  Eating what you excrete is usually not an optimal evolutionary strategy.

I saw a Reddit thread where somebody noted that Reddit was a major source for AI data mining.  The thread then evolved into a nonstop stream of misinformation posts like "The capitol of the USA is Cleveland", and "pi is 27.436592". Still makes me laugh when I think about it.

The internet is getting ens**ttified.  It was good while it lasted, which wasn't very long.

Technology is great.  I'd hate to go back to anxiously awaiting the next issue of Saltwater Sportsman hoping for a new tidbit of information.  There was very little else to go on besides magazines.  Old geezers drinking Schlitz and shooting the bull on the pier or at the local bait shop were the original influencers and original sources of misinformation.

Hey Dave, I thought you coined a new word, so I Googled it.  It is a real word in the electronic genre. It sure fits a lot of situations.  Dominick
Leave the gun.  Take the cannolis.

There are two things I don't like about fishing.  Getting up early in the morning and boats.  The rest of it is fun.

It is a real problem which is only going to get worse as skepticism, critical thinking and literacy decline. Just keeping it to the world of fishing reel so many AI search results are a melange of fact and myth and misapprehension.

Yeah,  I am not that clever.

With all those pay for placement algorithms burying the desired data beneath a pile of poop, old style Google search got so sh***ty that now folk are using AI search to find what they used to find with a simple text string search.  But Google is actively figuring out how to monetize AI search, so soon it will be equally sh***ty, in addition to polluting the actual knowledge repository it is pillaging,  while  burning  a shockingly obscene amount of electricity in the process.

It is a relatively new phenomenon on such a large scale, with Google being the most obvious incontinent tech giant.  But it is not just Google. Hence the need for a new word.

BTW, there are less ensh***tified search engines out there including DuckDuckGo and startpage.  I just use Google for science stuff (Google scholar) nowadays.

Sorry for taking  us off topic...

I have used and do continue to use DuckDuckGo as an alternative search engine to Google.  It is free and can be customized to your preferences.

I also use GMX as a primary email provider, and yahoo mail for stuff that is not as important and where I don't care too much whether my email gets  polluted with junk mail.  GMX is also free, as well as super reliable.

GMX (German Mail Exchange) is a German-based email provider.

The laws and privacy regulations in Germany are among the most stringent in the world.

I have had yahoo for a little less than 30 years, and GMX for about 14 years.

Many folks enjoy being tracked and marketed by their search preferences online —- and that's OK —- I'm just not one of them.
