Hi all,

I just bought a squall II 15SDCS for surf fishing, and was curious about new Penns.  The last few new reels I've bought have been cheap chinese reels (piscifun, kastking) and they require opening up and cleaning the crap factory lube and re greasing and oiling (at least they used to).  Will I need to do that with a Chinese built Penn?  Also, the squall does not have a backup dog system, what is the best way to maintain anti reverse bearings.

Thanks

All my reels (new or used) get a pre-fish service.  Doesn't matter the brand or price point.  Paying special attention to screw holes, bearings, and reel foot screws and contact point.  My Fathoms were built in China and I found the grease inside the to be generally OK, but 1 just had grease just globbed in.  I spread it with a toothbrush and was good to go.   Bill
It may not be very productive,
but it's sure going to be interesting!

Do you know if they ship the drags dry?  I guess I'm opening it either way. I have a new piscifun alijoz that I need to open anyway, might as well make an afternoon of it...

A drop of oil on the AR bearing.

So irritating. Amazon sent me a used, drop damaged regular 15 star drag. Oy, new casting special was the order..... they sent another but now I have to return this crap.

thanks. Seems weird oiling something that functions by friction. But that seems to be the word. No grease but a tiny bit of light oil.

I'm just full of off the wall Ideas of debatable popularity. And this is no exception:

Consider it a wear part. It'll eventually go bad, but might take a while. Yes to a drop of oil. It'll help. But also if you like this reel consider just getting on mystic and ordering a spare AR assembly and put it away in a drawer somewhere in case this one fails in a few years. Penn is better than most when it comes to keeping them available for a while but it's still not a bad idea

Does seem counterintuitive, but the methodology is that the two things that overwhelmingly cause issues/failure with AR clutches is: 1 - Overlubrication or the use of grease that ultimately interferes/gums up the tensioners that "wedge" the rollers to the shaft to create the anti-reverse, or 2 - Light corrosion to untreated metals.  The oil applied very sparingly mitigates these two issues.
While I have many reels with this feature and have never had an issue, I personally feel the whole "instant anti-reverse" thing is overblown marketing, along with the "Gazillion + 1 bearings" marketing hype in never reels. - john

I'm fond of spinning it a few times to distribute the oil, then taking some compressed air to it to remove any excess. "Just barely enough" is often the right amount of lubricant. Especially here.

This is wise.

I think new on ebay has better price and Amazon has problems with sending you bad stuff from second sellers,,,, ;D

Why put a bearing in a reel handle that will fail.

they sent me an open box return to replace the scuffed wrong reel. To their credit, rather than replace that, which they can't because second return on same order, they just said screw it, here is you money and keep the reel. So free reel. But I have to go through it with a fine tooth comb. Paid for the battalion II surf rod though.
