When I fish fresh water it is local ponds. All of the ponds I fish are stocked by the Texas Parks and Wildlife folks. These ponds range from about 10 acres to 33 acres in size. I took two of my grandsons fishing yesterday at one of my go to ponds for small bass and catfish. I set the grandsons up with punch bait for catfish and I fished a wacky worm (two seperate colors actually) for bass. We all got skunked. I usually land 4-5 bass in an hour or so fishing a wacky worm and this was the second time we tried punch bait for the catfish. I fish wacky worms with a mint condition DQ 221 that I got from Fred. I will say this, it's my favorite reel for fresh water. Smooth as butter. I even tried a topwater lure on one of my ABUs just to see if any of the nine separate species that are stocked in the pond were interested. Nope! Still skunked. The best part of the day was when I was driving the grandsons home and they both told me they a fun. It can't get much better than that.

sounds like a good day to me, nice opportunity to teach the kids thats fishing, one day you cath many fish and one day nothing at all.

That's teaching fishing not catching. See spending time with Dad was the fun part of their day.  Dominick
Leave the gun.  Take the cannolis.

There are two things I don't like about fishing.  Getting up early in the morning and boats.  The rest of it is fun.

Actually Grandpa. Their father passed away at the age of 35 from a heart attack. He used to take them fishing also.

Even better.  It is fun to hang out with the grandkids.  Dominick

Totally awesome.  Time outdoors with family as opposed to "screen time".  So much better for everyone. - john

Sounds like you're keeping fishing a happy memory for them.

Also sounds like you're training some real fishermen. What do I mean by that? Well, if it's only fun when you're catching, you might not actually enjoy fishing.

Trips like this whether you caught any or not are memories never forgotten by your grandsons.

I took my dad's only fishing pole fishing with my grandsons 2 weeks ago. They both caught fish on it.
It felt like he was with us. :fish

The most important aspect you are teaching here is —- patience.

Along with an appreciation of the rhythm's and the appreciation of Nature.

This is real and substantial —- not even in the same league as a video game.

Some of my best fishing trips have been when I caught no fish.  Plus, I didn't have to clean them and rush them home.

It is all about sharing your experience with others, as you open a new world for them —- which could last a lifetime, in which they might teach others also —- long after we are gone.

I forgot to mention that grandpa had fun too. The youngest hooked his leg (not even past the tip of the tip) and the oldest smacked himself in the head with punch bait. What did grandpa say...did you learn anything about being aware of where your hook is? LOL

"Punch bait?"
One thing about that kind of experience is that you get to see the interest level of the kids. How long with the not catching do they stick with it?
Personally, I just don't get bored. Even as a kid. Something the adults who took me fishing noticed. I could never stop thinking that there were probably fish down there and if I did something right I could get them. That kept me energized. Same thing today and I'm almost 70.
That's why I like to go by myself. No unprepared("I'm hungry/cold/tired/bored let's go, we're not gonna catch anything anyway") people to ruin the trip.

Fishing tackle is an art form and all fish caught on the right tackle are"Gfish"!
