I recently built a custom cedar vault (20"x18"x12", weighing about 24 lbs) to safely encase my parents' urns for burial. When I started checking around for the best rates to ship the chest to my sister's home in Western New York, I was shocked to find that standard prices ranged from $80 to over $150.

While hunting for a better deal, I stumbled across a website called Pirate Ship. It allows you to buy UPS and USPS labels at deeply discounted commercial rates. I decided to sign up and check their pricing—and I am glad I did. I was able to purchase a UPS label for just $39 and shipped the package without any issues.

If you have a heavy or bulky package to ship and want to avoid paying full retail prices, I highly recommend checking them out to see how much you can save: Pirate Ship..

Sorry to hear about your parents, that's a really nice way to pay homage to them

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. Let us know when/if it arrives and that'll instill a bit more confidence.

I was worried about the site being legit too, but everything went smoothly. I bought the label, dropped the box off at UPS, and they took it. I'm tracking it on their site now and will confirm once it lands.

Update, my sister received her package last evening well ahead of Friday's ETA.

I did some research, and outside the sketchy Pirate Ship name, the co-owners wanted to build a company (started in 2014) with some personality that flipped the bird to traditional retail corporate culture. The negative is their contracts are only with UPS and USPS -- No FedEX or DHL.

I'm quite satisified with the process and heavy discounted pricing.
