I have use oiled craft store felt quite fine on older generation, light duty reels where light line, old, not-worth-hunting spare aluminum or pot metal gears, low drag was all that was needed, and crafting carbontex custom washer.

Catching three-pound cats and bass on, say, an Olympic VS1500, Heddon or Ryobi Silver Cloud from the early 80's or a graphite Silstar with 12 lb. mono passes muster. James will support; I'm not putting a carbon drag worth more than the reel in a dock box queen.

Do I upgrade Penns? Certainly. Could you clean off their old asbestos drags and lock down for grouper? Sure. 60 yo leather is a different aminal.

yeah, i'm betting that felt will start to stick and stutter at higher drag settings.  i would stick to carbon fiber.  it will stay smooth forever.
