Hi All,

I am newbie in reel servicing. Due to unavailability of reel service center in country I currently reside, I have to strip down my 9 months reel Stella 4000FE to fix the Anti reverse Cam Spring dislocation problem. After all parts were put back together, I fixed the spring problem but unfortunate now my reel is no more smooth - I mean handle winding is little bit heavy. The other problem is the bail arm is not auto closed whenever the handle was turned. I used the schematic and below url as my reference :

Any idea which parts I might did wrong? Really appreciate all the feedback and helps and a million times thank you in advance.

Thanks & Regards.

If you packed the bearings with grease the reel will feel like it has more drag when turning the handle. If not then recheck that all your shims on the main gear are in the correct place ( the main gear may be pressing too hard on the pinion - remove shim). When the bail return sticks ( bail arm does not return easily) it is usually due to the the bail wire orientation being incorrect. to adjust this loosen the line roller screw so you can make small adjustments to  the bail wire position. This part can be tricky so some trial and error may be required to get it right. To test if the bail return is working remove the screw holding the far side of the bail wire and test the bail return. It should snap freely - if not the problem may be in the bail return - like the bail return push wire may not be in the right hole.
Tip  - If you remove the far side bail wire screw the bail wire attachment should  naturally line up and not be twisted or sprung out. If it is adjust the line roller side of the wire until it is correct.

Jim,

Thank you very much for your quick reply, I will try it out by today. BTW what do you mean by 'shim' ?

Problem solved. The issue was I wrongly install one of the washer. Thanks Jim for your helps, your explanation helps me to fix the bail arm problem.

You got it!!!
The shims are the thin washers used to remove extra play.

This problem almost caused me heart attack, but it was good experience. Before I need to refer to many forums posting and document just to open the reel and took couple of hours, but now I can do it just less than 30 minutes without even looking to any manual. Will try again to my other reel Stella 10K. Thanks again to you Jim and to all this lovely forum members.
