The GS-1 was pristine upon arrival & I haven't even taken the cover off yet.

The 1000C had been in a box 20+ years according to the seller. It was dirty, both bail springs were broken, missing a cover screw (Fred came through again) & sounded like a pepper grinder . Hard grease which I thought was broken plastic at first glance was the cause of the grinding noise.

It cleaned up nicely & is as smooth as the GS-1 now.

Nice work James. Did you notice any significant differences inside. I'm familiar with the silver series and black and gold series, but not the gold series.

Great clean up and service on that 1000C, James!

The Silver 1000C and the Gold GS-1 are identical, even inside —- except one is silver and one gold.  And also, the ultralight gold series Daiwa's have full ball bearings at all (3) points —- the silvers have bushings (which is not a bad thing either!).

Folks who poo-poo these little Daiwa's from the late 70's —- are missing the boat.  They either haven't fished these, haven't had them apart, or are getting them confused with later plastic reels starting in the early 80's.

On ANY of the silver series reels —- ball bearings can replace the bushings (whether bronze or nylon) with the same sized ball bearings.  Just measure the 3 parts of the bushings —- then order the same sized ball bearings.  Just a drop in operation!

A 500C, 700C, 1000C, GS-1, Mini-Mite, or other small metal-bodied Daiwa's from this era —- when paired with an appropriate ultralight rod —- is about the most fun an angler can legally enjoy.  These are tough little powerhouses.

I always have a setup of one of these, and an ultralight rod in a tube in the trailer, truck, and also take one in my pocket when dry-hiking or back-packing in the backcountry of the Sierra Nevadas.

I was a spincast dude when these guys came out, in fact my 1st paycheck after high school graduation in '81 me  & my friend went to Kmart & bought matching Daiwa Silvercast 210RL reels. He passed away last year,I knew him since 4th grade :'(  Then my mother got me a Goldcast GC100 at work, it was one of the promotional gifts. Both reels still work as designed.

Had I known, hindsight being 20/20,most likely would  have a herd of them now.

Fred if you upgrade a 1000C to all BB are the Main gear bearings flanged like the bushings or do you know the specifics
for the mod? I probably will leave it stock just curious.

Thank you,
JP

Don't know, cuz just never paid attention.  It just works perfectly.

To be clear, I do very few bearing changeouts on these —- because the bushings work well in these tiny reels. It is just something I wanted to mention for others who wanted to do the mod.

Looks like I'm "missing the boat" with these little guys. My mind can't accept the gear setup and my eyes, nor mind, can handle the external bail trip body design.

Got a Mini-Mite I sent to Fred and have 3 or 4 various C examples in a junk box that need some parts and TLC. Can't make myself invest the time to mess with the darn things.
Love those open face spinning reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco Cardinals)

By no means are they Cardinals, but these little guys spin forever. Must be a well balanced rotor & premo BB.
Normally I close the bail by hand on them anyway out of habit & less noise. It could virtually last forever with care unless the gears were stripped by a bigun.

I recently swapped out the nylon bushing on the main gear for a ball bearing on a 700c. The original nylon was not flanged and neither was the bearing. If it's the same size as the 700c I can send you one to try. Send me the measurements. Some nice gent from Houston gifted me a few.

It should be opened, all 47 year old grease removed, parts cleaned, bearings evacuated —- then closed up using modern synthetic grease & oil.  Check the drag.

Trust me on this —- you will never be sorry as you fish it knowing it is as good as it can be.

I do this to new reels out of the box.

No one preps a reel like a knowledgeable angler/reel mechanic.  Best to do it right.

Excellent and valuable reel!
