Hello to all,
I have finally found out information on this weird reel.
It definitely took a while.
It doesn't seem like a lot of people have ever seen this reel before, unless you have the 2010 March issue of the reel news put out by the old reel collectors association.
It is how I found about this reel.
Ben Wright wrote an article about it, titled, Latest, greatest find.
Apparently there are two of these reels known to exist.
They are prototype reels made by Pflueger or Shakespeare.  More likely Pflueger reels, according to the research that was done.
I just happened to come across the article browsing through the reel news magazines I got from the estate my wife and I purchased from a friend. It is also where the reel came from.

It looks like it could sharpen pencils back in the day. Congrats on solving the mystery. Very cool.
I woke today and suddenly nothing happened.

Dang I saw one of those at auction. Knew it was something odd. And almost bought it on those grounds alone. But I try not to buy stuff just because it's weird, unless I already know it's something special. Or so I tell myself.
Any machine is a smoke machine if you use it wrong enough.

Gfish

Cool! Is there a name on it?
Fishing tackle is an art form and all fish caught on the right tackle are"Gfish"!

Coffee

No, there are no markings on this reel anywhere.
Ben Wright did mention in his article that the reel he bought had B.G. 5/23/54 marked on the back in pencil.

This reel was purchased by my friend at Lang's auction in October of 2016.

You pretty much of got it's origin whittled down. Good for you. It was discussed it quite a bit a year ago. https://alantani.com/index.php/topic,40139.msg473367.html#msg473367

You never did quote me a price, though, and yes, most likely Pflueger since the paint is more consistent with their Supreme color than anything Shakespeare.
Love those open face spinning reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco Cardinals)
