Where is the line between a fishable reel and a shelf queen?

I would not be allowed to take up valuable shelf space with fishing reels.

My wife is a sweetheart and appreciates the fact that I don't p_$$ away money on alcohol, so she's fine with my obsession. She figures it's a lot better than me hanging out on some bar somewhere. Plus, she's found me some nice reels and a couple of cool display cases when she's been out antiqueing with a couple of her girl friends.

I guess I came into this reel fancying thing without any expectations that I would own reels I wouldn't use. I'm not developing a museum. I respect museums and their purpose of cataloging history. And I won't be vying for museum level artifacts.

Struggling a bit with that right now as 72 approaches and I have no idea how many reels I purchased in the last few years of my addiction. I have several that I will never fish. I was recently looking for a particular ocean city reel and several came up from one seller. I made the opening bid on 5 or 6 of them and nobody else bid? Unexpected large purchase. I hope that I didn't miss any major flaws on the reels and that the seller will be kind enough to combine freight as inexpensively as possible. I might keep two.
I need to start selling and get my stable down to under 50 reels.

What's meaningful to me doesn't necessarily mean anything to my kids. Even if they know it was meaningful to me. Try to sell to someone who will appreciate it, the future generations won't!

Yeah, that's the tough thing about such collections, esp fishing tackle. I guess I just have to be philosophical about it and realize the joy I received from them is their true value. Still hard. I knew a serious clock collector who recently passed. What a collection, esp his parts, materials, and tools, many hand-made to fit unique repairs. A couple friends divvied up what they wanted, and quite respectfully, but I realized (as they and family did) that there was no replacing this guy, or picking up where he left off.

I've joked that my lures, and other tackle, have special memories attached that are priceless. For sale? Not possible. No one could afford them! )

Years ago my grandson found a matchbox car I had put away.I had
2 identical still  in the box.

He wanted to open one & I told him it might be worth alot of money one day. I gave him the choice, he said he rather play with it now than have the money later.

There are a pair of 1974 Plymouth 'Cuda E-body Mopars on Barnfinds.com this week, one with 6 miles, one with 62 miles. These have obviously become collectibles, NOT usable automobiles, and purists would lose their minds if you put plates on them and started driving them. It's a shame.

As an old car guy, particularly with Mopars (or any old musclecar) it's become almost SOP to hire a brand expert to verify and authenticate. - john
