I was just gifted a 238 & had thought about getting one, but always passed. I must say it is a nice reel & came powder coated from Joe it looks great. I am taking it apart to look inside. It's well built like all DQ, reminds me of a Mitchell 304 on steroids. Now I am curious how small the 218 is?

The D-A-M Quick 218, 228, 238, & 248 were a less expensive series of spinners introduced by DQ starting around 1964.

Many of the components were the same as the higher quality DQ's —- and others were of a lesser quality, such as plastic crank handles, no worm drive, etc, —- but they are very capable reels.

The 238 & 248 are also found as trade reels under the Herter's name, and others.

I see the 218 doesnt look smaller just a different design & innards?

I have never had a 218 apart.

218 weighs 9.6 oz
228 weighs 11.1 oz
238 weighs 10.9 oz
248 weighs 11.1 oz

218, 228, 238 have same diameter spools —- 218 spool is a little shorter in height.  248 spool is a little larger than the other 3.

A 238 spool can be swapped out with a 220 spool.  Just need to change out the arbor arrangement.
