10# seems enough for a quick battle for most of the fish

I am wondering if that is about 6 lbs more drag than the gear mechanism can handle.  But that is just from looking at the photos.  I guess with that design, if you are not winding, then you are not loading the gears. so, maybe just don't wind too hard.Probably not an issue for salmon, and it is a salmon reel.

Come to think of it, I would wonder about the anti reverse too... is that dog looking thingy a clicker or an anti reverse dog?  How sturdy does the anti-reverse look?

Answering my earlier question about the nylock:  It looks like the original version of that reel came with a more cosmetically appealing screw on the handle plate.  The nylock might have been a post-production change.  With the plate spinning around, it might be tricky to keep a threaded connection tight.  Photo of the original here in the reel maker's facebook page.

 Multiplier reels have a disadvantage over direct drive. The guy with the multiplier reel has to pump and reel, but the direct drive reel is the opposite. No pump and reel......just reel and you know you're gaining line

I think that these type of multiplier reels are still direct drive. The handle spins backward when line is being taken.

I agree with you about the advantage of direct drive not slipping while you are winding,  but I think that pump and wind is still useful.  It is a key technique for bluewater fly fishing with direct drive fly reels.  Sometimes the fish is too heavy or strong to wind against with just your thumb and finger on a little knob.
