Resto mod 1937 Hardy Altex n°2 mk.IIII

So, I've had this 1937 Raymond Humble assembled Hardy Altex n°2 mk.IIII, disassembled, and sitting in a parts tub for a year or so, with no progress.

It is an early version with 2 piece handle nut and early rear patent badge.

She was packed full of old grease and bail arm, non working, due to broken and missing sun gear teeth.

These teeth are the Achilles heel of mechanical gear bail arm Hardy's.

Cast gear teeth are very fragile if manhandled or forced.

I had some free time and decided to reassemble and resto mod her.

The large dust cover gear was pin riveted on vs. held with machine screws,  so I left dust cover and gear attached to body.

I've removed pinned gears and covers before, but it's tedious and wasn't needed here.

So, just taped it off.

I gave her a coat of primer and a coat of British racing green and Wimbledon white contrasting paint scheme.

What better colors for this English beauty?!!

I got broken sun gear set in place where missing teeth do not come into play during bail arm actuation, either open or closed.

Properly working every time, now, and so smooth and quiet.

Polished all brightwork and hardware.

Gave complete new lubrication with faucet valve grease, where needed, and then liberal bath in light machine oil, everywhere.

Looking real sharp and ready for some crappie action!

You are a master reelsmith. Another means of spool oscillation I haven't seen before not to mention a gear driven bail. Thanks for sharing the photos.

Beautiful restoration and the colors work nicely. 

On the broken gear, have you considered having one made from nylon via a plastic printer? 

I ask because I had a plastic gear printed for a 1999 Benz electronic adjustable seat to replace the broken plastic gear and found the replacement to be very dependable.  See the 4:54 mark of this video () for the gear I had printed.  As you can expect, this gear was never part of Benz parts list and my only other option was to find a replacement seat.

I don't think the broken gear has as much stress on it, so I wonder if having one of a few printed could be a possible solution. 

I'm sure our plastic printer expert (jurelometer) on this forum could print you up a few and will chime in on the possibility of one as feasible solution.

I see no reason why a 3d printed sun gear would not work.
 They don't take much actual stress from use, but only from misuse.
 I have several in my parts bin, but a gear can be missing up to 4 teeth and still be usable, as shown.

Yes. The sun gear can be missing up to 3-4 teeth and still function correctly.

I was able to take the resto mod 1937 Raymond Humble Hardy n°2 mk.IIII out for a little trip today.

Caught 27 for 10 keepers. So, got dinner for tonight!

She performed great and as expected, landed the feisty crappies with ease!
