Rebuild/refresh of an old 6/0 in desperate need ot TLC.

Hello all, i have been recommended to post on this forum from BDoutdoors forum.

I have an old 6/0 senator which belonged to my recently departed father- i remember it when I was a kid and I know he never used it, where it came from is unknown.   I believe its a standard 114 model and NOT the 114H.

The reel is in urgent need of TLC, mainly cosmetic but some parts are worn and need replacement.

I have found 5 problems:

1.  the strangest is the spool clicker gear wheel.. the 2 cogs are somehow offset and worn-  why/how are a mystery but the cogs are solid on the shaft and the shaft is peened over the cogs.

Does anyone know if the cogs have keyways? - maybe I could try and tap the 1 cog back into alignment but dont want to knock the shaft out of true!

2.The clicker button has been replaced at some stage- the clicker shaft hasn't been peened properly so has excess play and has caused the wear on the clicker cogs,  but it does click!

3.some drag washers are missing, i have 1 eared washer and 3 fibre washers- these need replacement- 1 is on my finger in the photo.

Any suggestions on a drag washer kit?  Cheaper the better!!

4. The flat bar spring is weak/broken.

5.The handle is broken/missing- looking for an alternative- happy to drill out the handle spigot and bolt in a different handle to the arm,  maybe something from temu/aliexpress 🤣


I noticed the spool runs in bushes, no bearings  to be seen.

 Im not looking to make this a perfect rebuild, im just looking to make it functional and under no illusion it will never be perfect so this will be an absolute  budget rebuild!!

I would like to use the reel for some trolling in December and that's probably the only time it will be used.


Can anyone give an estimate on the age of the reel?


For the corroded parts, I have access to a chroming tank if  i really need to, and the brass parts will be cleaned  in the next few days.

The drag washer you have contains asbestos.  The spool shaft has 2 flats than keep the clicker cog from spinning.  Be careful and do not bend the spool taping it in place.  A replacement 29L-114 aluminum spool is over $70.

Hello,

You can make your own leaf springs for the anti-reverse dog from brass or copper sheet.

Being that the reel looks to have been well-used, I'd probably keep an eye on eBay and such for a donor reel—-from which you can piece together necessary parts.   

You can also upgrade the handle to one from a 9/0, I believe it's part # 24-115.

Many thanks for the replies,  the clicker cogs situation is even weirder if they are keyed to the shaft as the peening looks factory-   double clicks then  🤣

Will scour ebay etc for some parts  as I go through the rebuild, buy a bit of metal polish  can work wonders

1. You may have to live with that spool as new ones are expensive. You might be better off finding a parts reel somewhere.

2. You can replace the whole clicker button setup, attempt to repeen the original or just live with it. The needed parts are:
  35-114 (035-1182915) Click Tongue $1.85
  35-114H (036-1182991) Click Button $5.60
  69B-600 (069B-1184129) Retaining Ring (E-Clip) $1.50

3. A complete and upgraded replacement kit is available from Penn, making it a 5 stack with HT-100 washers,
  6-114SP (006-114SP) Drag Washer Kit with metals $16.50

4. If you are speaking of the dog spring, a new one is:
  14-114 (014-1181395) $1.30

5. There are many options for fixing the handle. You can drill out the old part and put a different knob on, or you can find a complete handle somewhere, such as eBay. A used 114H handle will fit and runs $20-$30 on eBay. A complete handle from a 114, a 114H or a 115 will work.

 I am not a Penn guy ,but 2 click gears ?    One is diffidently upside down with 180 degree flats on the gear ...

I recall working on a black Senator last year that had double gears, slightly offset, on the clicker end of the spool: 4/0 or 6/0 I think. Remember thinking it looked odd, but it worked fine. Yours looks like it's been rubbing, but maybe you can dress it up with a small file. Not saying it's correct, but it may work. I would try it before trying to line the gears up, or buying a new spool. As others suggested, a donor reel would be more economical than chroming over parts you have, and maybe a better spool too. Nice that you're going to put it back in service!

Can't see the spool, but I believe Penn used a 3-piece spool and the leaf spring on the dog until the early 1950s. Hopefully someone with more knowledge can give you a better estimate of age.

Hello all, thanks for the replies.. 

 interesting that someone else has seen another offset cog clicker before.   As someone else mentioned the cogs are keyed to the shaft and the peening suggests a factory process.  Will clean up the cog teeth edges with a needle file but 1 cog is badly worn and can't be fixed-   I have to live with it.

Chroming-  if I decide to go that route, it costs me a 6 pack of beers and a smile. 

The spool is a 1 piece brass unit.

Clicker button- will try repeen otherwise will use the clicler with the circlip.

Handle- see if i find a super cheap one on ebay-    this is a budget rebuld  !!

Yep, im not looking for perfection here by any means, more of a - will it work?probably, does it look nice, no. 😂

PM me your address- I very likely have a handle in good nick and will send it on, N/C. All the rest of the lads have you in the right direction- sort the clicker, drag, and leaf spring and this reel goes another 80 years.
