If you placed some vinegar into a syringe, and just place a drop or two under the button, with out getting it on the tail plate to much, it look much better than when you first started, good luck cheers Don.

Tommy suggested vinegar also.
I ordered a couple of empty small squeeze bottles with the needle point applicator.
They work the best for me when trying to apply liquids in small areas.
Can't find the syringes right now. Still looking. Those would be even better because the needles even smaller.

I've had good luck using this to free up frozen rusted needlenose pliers, and also combat rust and corrosion in general. You can find it on Amazon

Also Lucas synthetic  reel oil works good on loosening things.

Another great suggestion. I actually have some out in our detached garage, where is was banned to, after using it in the house. It's a bit fragrant. I forgot that I had it.
 
If I could harness some of Mr. Foakes' organizing skills. I would spend more time out there in the garage.
Cooler weather coming here in Florida and time to get out there and do my annual cleaning. But I digress.

Kroil would be a good candidate for one of the two needle nose squeeze bottles that I ordered.

I just Kroiled my '75 Evinrude clamp screws, before I had to use channellocks to get the motor off the boat. I  actually broke one handle. I just replaced the handles & now they turn like "butta". From now on I am going to spray the screws every year.

I found this WD-40 pen that I was unaware of and just gave it a dab.

Used Super Lube Oil with PTFE on it multiple time now and it moves almost too freely.
I think I am losing the rusty metal thickness every time I flood it and clean up the brown liquid.
I have gone through at least 50 Q-Tips cleaning removing the small amounts of rusty liquid.
Maybe there was a washer under the tongue that has rusted away and left a gap?
I guess I will test it after I ciean up the rest of the ugly reel and reassemble it while I watch College Football today.
