Dam Quick 5000 drag help

First time working on these—reel is either new or very lightly used.

I swapped out the in-spool asbestos washer for carbon fiber. Went to spool it up with line and am getting a wiping sound/feeling when the spool is turned slowly by hand.

Investigating more, it appears the noise is coming from the hexagonal (brake lining?) washer underneath the spool. Seems to quiet down a bit when line is pulled as if a fish is on.

Any ideas, or is this just the nature of the reel and will it break in over time? The drag is quite smooth otherwise.

The hexagon in bottom of spool also asbestos , I have not change with carbon washer . Try to put grease on these washer ,it should help . this reel have quite small surface brake ,5001 is better

You can try grease on the under spool hexagon asbestos washer —- and that will quiet it down —- but it will also reduce the drag effectiveness.  Just like oiling the brake pads on your automotive brakes. 

The solution would be to carefully cut a CF washer to the same exact hex shape —- then LIGHTLY grease it with Cal's or SuperLube.

The other thing is to make sure there are two round brass washers between the ratchet wheel and the  bridge plate.  These move around a bit and will reduce the noise —- which just means the drag is working top and bottom to squeeze from both sides of the spool, as designed.

One of the main differences between a DQ5000 & a DQ5001 is as Quang mentioned.  The surface area top and bottom of the drags is 2.75 times larger on the 5001 —- even when the multiple small drag washers in the 5000 are added together.

Yeah—-fairly small washers for such a big reel. It looks like they tried to use the bottom washer as a drag washer by keying it to the spool. I have a 3001 and thought there would be at least some similarities, boy was I wrong.


Good to know a hex-cut carbon fiber will work. I tried slipping a razor blade underneath the asbestos hex washer and couldn't get it to lift; it's really stuck on there. At least the drag is smooth and steady. I'll leave it be for now.

I did it on a 3000. Stock hex brake washers changed to C-Tex. It took a bit of size finagling(I always start with too big a replacement), but worked and seemed smother during drag tests.
